Javed Miandad‘s place among the greatest ODI batters is built on much more than statistics. Across 233 One-Day Internationals, he scored 7,381 runs at an average of 41.70, figures that were exceptional for an era when batting was considerably more demanding than it is today. He was not an explosive opener or a power hitter in the modern sense. Instead, he mastered the art of controlling a chase, manipulating the field and ensuring that Pakistan remained in the contest regardless of the situation.

No innings defines Miandad’s ODI legacy more completely than his unbeaten 116 in the Austral-Asia Cup final against India. Chasing 246 in a high-pressure final, Pakistan lost wickets at regular intervals and appeared to be slipping behind the required rate. Miandad, however, remained composed throughout the chase, carefully managing the innings while building partnerships with the middle order.
His masterpiece culminated in one of the most famous moments in cricket history. Pakistan needed four runs from the final ball when Miandad struck Chetan Sharma for a six over the leg side to seal a one-wicket victory. The innings transformed a difficult chase into a memorable triumph and secured Pakistan’s first major ODI tournament title. More than four decades later, it remains the benchmark for finishing an ODI chase under pressure.
Although the Sharjah hundred is the more celebrated innings, Miandad’s highest ODI score arguably showcased his batting range even better. In a rain-affected 33-over contest against India in Lahore, he produced an unbeaten 119 from just 77 deliveries. At a time when strike rates above 100 were uncommon, Miandad attacked from the outset and dominated the Indian bowling attack with calculated aggression.
The innings included six fours and five sixes and powered Pakistan to 252 in only 33 overs. Miandad shared a massive partnership with Zaheer Abbas and ensured that India never seriously threatened the target. The knock remained his highest ODI score and demonstrated that he was capable of batting at a tempo far ahead of his era when circumstances demanded it.
On paper, a score of 58 may appear modest compared to Miandad’s centuries, but few innings carried greater importance. Pakistan entered the 1992 World Cup final against England under immense pressure after a difficult start to the tournament. Early wickets left the side in trouble before Miandad joined captain Imran Khan at the crease.
The pair added 139 runs for the third wicket and restored Pakistan’s innings after a cautious beginning. Miandad’s contribution was built on experience and game awareness rather than flair. He rotated the strike, absorbed pressure and allowed Pakistan’s innings to gain stability before the late assault that lifted the total to 249. Pakistan went on to win its first World Cup, and Miandad’s innings was a crucial component of the foundation on which that victory was built.
