July 17 will always be remembered as one of the best days in Pakistan’s Test cricket history in the 21st century. The Men in Green recorded a historic win against England at the Lord’s Cricket Ground on this day, 10 years ago. An iconic moment for Pakistan, with skipper Misbah-ul-Haq’s image of doing push-ups on the field after reaching three figures still etched in the memory of cricket fans worldwide.
Pakistan won the toss and elected to bat first and went on to post 339 runs in their first innings. Misbah was the star of the show, scoring 114 off 199 balls before being dismissed by Stuart Broad. After nudging a ball from Steven Finn down to third man to reach his century, the right-handed batter celebrated with a salute and plenty of push-ups, as a nod to still being able to perform at the age of 42.
The captain, however, was not the only key player for Pakistan during their historic win at Lord’s. Spinner Yasir Shah took six wickets in the first innings, putting England on the back foot from the get-go.
Having scored a further 215 runs in the second innings, Pakistan gave England a target of 283 runs to win the first Test. The Asian outfit, however, would require less than a day to take 10 wickets to claim a memorable victory.
On July 17, 2016, on Day 4 of the Test, Pakistan made an excellent start to the fourth innings, taking England’s first three wickets for just 47 runs thanks to Rahat Ali. The left-arm pacer got the better of opening batters Alastair Cook and Alex Hales, along with Joe Root. The Three Lions’ middle-order, however, produced a fightback, with Jonny Bairstow, James Vince and Gary Ballance all getting into their 40s before giving their wicket away.
The Pakistan bowlers made light work of the lower order, bundling England out for 207, winning the Test by 75 runs. Despite Misbah’s century in the first innings, it was Yasir who was declared Player of the Match after taking a 10-wicket haul in the match.
It was a memorable moment for Pakistan cricket. At the same venue six years ago, the Men in Green were involved in a spot-fixing scandal which resulted in captain Salman Butt, along with fast bowlers Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Asif, getting banned from all forms of the game.
Six years later, Amir, in his redemption arc, went on to take two wickets in the fourth innings to help Pakistan secure the win.
Despite winning the first Test, Pakistan would go on to draw the four-match series 2-2 after winning the fourth Test by 10 wickets at the Kennington Oval. Talismanic skipper Misbah was awarded Player of the Series after scoring 282 runs across four Test matches. He would retire from international cricket a year later, having played 75 Test matches for his nation and scoring more than 5,000 runs at an average of 46.62.
