Javed Miandad, one of Pakistan’s greatest cricketers, was born on June 12, 1957, in Karachi. Few batsmen have combined skill, competitiveness and consistency as effectively as Miandad did across a career that stretched for two decades. At a time when Pakistan cricket was establishing itself among the strongest teams in the world, Miandad emerged as its most dependable batting figure and one of the finest players of his generation.
Miandad arrived on the international scene as a teenager and made an immediate impact. In only his third Test match, against New Zealand in Lahore in 1976, he scored a double century, becoming the youngest player at the time to reach that landmark in Test cricket. It was an innings that announced the arrival of a batsman with exceptional temperament and an appetite for long stays at the crease. Over the years that followed, he developed into the cornerstone of Pakistan’s batting line-up.
His Test record remains among the finest produced by a Pakistani batter. Across 124 Tests, Miandad scored 8,832 runs at an average of 52.57, including 23 centuries. Those numbers only tell part of the story. He was renowned for his ability to rescue difficult situations, adapt to varying conditions and score runs against some of the strongest bowling attacks of his era. Whether facing the pace of the West Indies, the swing of England or the spin attacks of the subcontinent, Miandad consistently found ways to succeed.
In One-Day Internationals, Miandad was equally influential. He accumulated 7,381 runs in 233 matches and played a central role in Pakistan’s rise as a major force in limited-overs cricket. His approach was built on intelligent strike rotation, sharp running between the wickets and an acute understanding of match situations. Long before batting analytics became commonplace, Miandad mastered the art of pacing an innings according to the demands of the game.
No discussion of Miandad is complete without mention of Sharjah in 1986. Chasing victory against India in the Austral-Asia Cup final, Pakistan needed four runs from the last ball. Miandad struck Chetan Sharma for a six over midwicket, sealing one of the most famous finishes in cricket history. The shot became an enduring image of Indo-Pak cricket and remains one of the defining moments of the ODI format.
Miandad also holds a unique place in World Cup history. He represented Pakistan in six World Cups, a record at the time, and was a key member of the squad that won the 1992 tournament under Imran Khan. His experience and composure proved invaluable during Pakistan’s successful campaign.
When Miandad retired from international cricket in 1996, he left behind a legacy built on productivity, resilience and cricket intelligence. He later served Pakistan cricket in coaching and administrative roles, but his lasting reputation rests on what he achieved with the bat. On his birthday, the cricketing world remembers a player whose influence extended far beyond statistics and whose place among the game’s great batsmen remains secure.
