Considered one of the bona fide greats of the Australian game, Allan Border’s stature as a cricketing legend is eclipsed only by a few people who have played this game. A gritty left-handed batter who bowled handy left-arm spin, Border is considered one of Australia’s greatest cricket captains, overseeing an era where the team established itself as a true cricketing powerhouse of the world.
Border made his debut for New South Wales in 1976, scoring over 600 runs in grade cricket in Australia during that year. After several Australian cricketers were banned after they participated in the World Series Cricket, Border received a maiden call-up on the back of a stellar domestic season, making his Test debut in Melbourne against England. In his next Test in Sydney, Border looked in complete control, using his feet against the spinners to score 60 and 45 despite the Australians being beaten. He was dropped for the final Test of that Ashes series, the only Test he missed in his career.
Border scored his first century in the Test series against Pakistan, which followed the Ashes. He scored 105 at the MCG before scores of 85 and 66 not out at Perth saw the Aussies square the series. He finished the series with 276 runs at an average of 92. He scored 521 runs at 43.42 in the Test series against India in 1979, including a mammoth 162 in Madras. He was proactive against the spinners and played the bowling better than his teammates. He scored a brilliant 115 against England in Perth to cross 1000 Test runs, becoming the fastest Australian player at the time to cross the milestone, taking just 354 days. He scored 150 and 153 against Pakistan in Lahore, becoming the first of two players to score 150-plus scores in both innings of a Test match.
Border was reluctantly named captain of the Australian side after Kim Hughes stepped down in tears after poor performances against the West Indies in the 1984-85 season. In a stellar partnership with former skipper Bob Simpson as coach, Border led the Aussies to the 1987 World Cup crown in India, establishing them as a powerhouse. His biggest achievement as captain was the away Ashes win against England, winning 4-0. Border scored six half-centuries, and his approach to be more standoffish with the English side worked wonders.
Border played his final Test for Australia in 1994 in the first series between them and South Africa since their reinstatement. He retired with 11,174 runs in Test cricket, the most by an Australian batter until it was eclipsed by Ricky Ponting. He played 153 consecutive Tests, the most played at one stretch, a record which was broken by Alistair Cook in 2018. Border has been immortalised as one of the first inductees into the ICC Hall of Fame. The Allan Border Medal is a yearly award given to the best Australian cricketer, while the trophy for the Test series between India and Australia is named the ‘Border-Gavaskar Trophy’ in his honour.
