India and Bangladesh have had some significant battles in recent years. However, Bangladesh’s most iconic win against India has to be the one they had during the 2007 ODI World Cup in March. The Men in Blue failed to progress beyond the group stage that time. Two months later, a wounded Indian side travelled to Bangladesh to face the Tigers in a Test series and ODI matches. The tourists won the three-match ODI series 2-0, with one game being abandoned. Meanwhile, the first Test in Chattogram ended in a draw after a gritty effort from the home side.
It all boiled down to the second and final Test match, which was played at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur from May 25. Bangladesh captain Habibul Bashar made an interesting choice to bowl first after winning the toss. Teams generally opt to bat first in Tests in the sub-continent as the pitches deteriorate as the games go on. The move backfired big time for Bangladesh.
Dinesh Karthik, who was playing as a specialist batter, opened along with Wasim Jaffer, making the opposition bowlers go on a leather hunt. Karthik was eventually dismissed for 129 after batting 212 balls. He hit 16 fours during his solid knock. Jaffer also played well for his 138 off 229 deliveries before retiring ill. The conditions were hot and humid, and players had to grind it out in the middle. In Jaffer’s knock, he hit 17 boundaries.
Rahul Dravid, who was the captain of the Indian side, walked out to bat at No. 3. He played a very fluent knock, scoring 129 off 176 balls, with the help of 15 fours and one six. The Karnataka batter finished with an impressive strike rate of 73.29. Sachin Tendulkar, meanwhile, batted at No. 4 and scored a sedate century. His unbeaten knock of 122 not out came off 226 balls, as he hit eight fours and one six. This was the first instance in Test matches where the top four batters in a batting order scored centuries in an innings. Sourav Ganguly was the only batter who missed out, as he was dismissed for 15. However, MS Dhoni threw his bat around and amassed an unbeaten 51 off just 50 deliveries, hitting three fours and four sixes. India eventually declared for 610/3 after batting 153 overs.
In reply, Bangladesh were bowled out for 118, as Zaheer Khan bagged a five-wicket haul. After being asked to follow on, Bangladesh batted slightly better but were dismissed for 253. Ramesh Power picked up three wickets, while Zaheer, Anil Kumble, and Tendulkar chipped in with two scalps apiece. India won the match by an innings and 239 runs and bagged the series 1-0.
