Stuart Broad is one of the best fast bowlers to have represented England. His records speak volumes about his exemplary contribution to England cricket. From getting hit for six sixes in an over to finishing with more than 600 Test wickets, Broad’s career is an embodiment of grit, determination, and perseverance.
On July 28, 2020, the right-arm pacer bagged his 500th scalp in Test cricket. This came in the third Test match against the West Indies at Old Trafford in Manchester. West Indies’ opening batter Kraigg Brathwaite became the 500th victim of Broad. It was a fuller delivery that kept low and wrapped the right-handed batter on his front pad. Broad became the seventh bowler overall and only the second Englishman after James Anderson to enter the 500-wicket club in the longest format of the game. Incidentally, Brathwaite was Anderson’s 500th victim as well.
It is interesting to note that Broad was famously dropped for the series opener. However, he took it in his stride and wreaked havoc on the Caribbean side. On his return to the side in the second Test in Manchester, Broad picked up three wickets in each innings.
However, he saved his best for the final game in the series. The Nottingham-born picked up six wickets in the first innings and scored 62 runs off just 45 balls. In the West Indies’ second innings, Broad bagged four wickets, finishing with sensational match figures of 10/67. Unfortunately, fans couldn’t witness Broad’s magnificent bowling performance from the stands as the match was played behind closed doors due to the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions.
Broad was named the Player of the Series from the England side. Meanwhile, all-rounder Roston Chase was the West Indies player who won that award. The Three Lions won the decisive third Test by a comprehensive margin of 269 runs and bagged the series 2-1. This match is remembered for many reasons, but Broad’s phenomenal comeback and his 500th scalp in Test cricket remains the highlight.
Stuart Broad played 167 Test matches, scoring 3,662 runs and taking 604 wickets. In One Day Internationals, he appeared in 121 matches, accumulating 529 runs alongside 178 wickets. Across his 56 T20 Internationals, he scored 118 runs and claimed 65 wickets.
Broad retired from all forms of cricket on July 29, 2023, during the fifth Test of the Ashes series. This game was played at the iconic Oval. Interestingly, Broad hit a six off the final ball he faced as a batter and took a wicket off the final ball he bowled, helping England win the Test and level the series 2-2.
