On May 16, 1956, legendary England off-spinner Jim Laker produced one of the most extraordinary bowling performances in cricket history by taking all ten wickets in an innings for Surrey County Cricket Club against the touring Australians at The Oval.
The remarkable feat came during Australia’s 1956 tour of England, a series that would eventually become synonymous with Laker’s dominance. Before his iconic 19-wicket haul in the fourth Test at Old Trafford later that summer, Laker had already demonstrated his mastery over the Australian batters in the tour matches, and his performance at The Oval on May 16 remains one of the standout moments of that campaign.
Australia, led by Ian Johnson, were playing one of eight tour matches scheduled during their visit to England. Batting first, the visitors posted 259 runs in their first innings. Opener Colin McDonald top-scored with a composed 89, while the charismatic all-rounder Keith Miller contributed a valuable 57.
However, the innings belonged entirely to Jim Laker. Bowling with incredible control, the off-spinner dismantled the Australian batting lineup single-handedly. Laker delivered a marathon spell of 46 overs, including 18 maidens, and finished with astonishing figures of 10 wickets for 88 runs. His economy rate of just 1.91 reflected the relentless pressure he exerted throughout the innings.
Taking all ten wickets in a first-class innings was an exceptionally rare achievement, even in an era dominated by spin bowling. Laker’s spell immediately entered cricket folklore and further cemented his reputation as one of the finest spin bowlers the game had ever seen.
In response, Surrey fought back strongly with the bat and posted 347 in their first innings, securing an important lead. Bernie Constable starred with a superb century, scoring 109 runs, while Thomas Clark added a useful 58. For Australia, captain Ian Johnson shouldered the bowling responsibility and returned figures of 6 for 168, while the talented left-arm pacer Alan Davidson claimed 3 for 101.
Australia’s struggles continued in their second innings as Surrey’s bowlers once again dominated proceedings. The visitors were bundled out for just 107 runs. Colin McDonald once again resisted with a determined 45, but the batting lineup failed to cope with Surrey’s spin attack on a responsive Oval surface.
This time it was left-arm spinner Tony Lock who led the charge, tearing through the Australian lineup with outstanding figures of 7 for 49. Laker, despite not repeating his first-innings heroics, still chipped in with 2 for 42 to ensure Australia collapsed cheaply. Surrey were left with a modest target of 20 runs, which they chased comfortably to complete a dominant victory over the touring side.
Laker’s performances during the 1956 Australian tour were nothing short of sensational. Across 10 innings against the tourists that summer, he claimed 46 wickets at a staggering average of just 9.60. His tally included two four-wicket hauls and four five-wicket hauls, underlining the complete control he enjoyed over the Australian batters.
